Another London Road
Brighton
This project was developed in partnership between BBM Sustainable Design and Pooran Desai of BioRegional Quintain as a set of development principles for the area around Brighton and Hove’s London Road shopping corridor and aims to capture the aspirations of the Another London Road Campaign, a volunteer group of local residents and local traders.
The project came about as a community based reaction to emerging development plans unsympathetic to the economic and environmental needs of local retailers and residents. The strategy has been informed by consultation work carried out with the local community and by observations made in and around the area focusing on its constraints and opportunities. It builds on the nearby One Brighton development which BioRegional Quintain have been instrumental in realizing, complete with its ten guiding principles for 'One Planet Living'. It also encompasses ideas towards sustainable urban living, which have been investigated by BBM Sustainable Design and the School of Architecture of the University of Brighton.
The work was informed by projects done by architecture students with BBM Sustainable Design at the University of Brighton, investigating possibilities of buildings playing new and vital roles in the workings of sustainable urban fabric. The briefs have been set to ask the question of how should our towns and cities be functioning ten or fifteen years from now so that as a society we can live within the means of the environment. Perhaps for now these ideas can be viewed as aspirational but it is important in terms of strategic planning to be aware of innovation and opportunity in the pursuit of sustainable urban living
